ASHWAGANDHA
In a randomized, double-blind, placebo-controlled study published in the Journal of Clinical Psychopharmacology, participants who consumed 300 mg of ashwagandha root extract twice daily for 60 days experienced a significant reduction in stress and anxiety levels, as measured by the Perceived Stress Scale and serum cortisol concentrations. Ashwagandha, an adaptogenic herb traditionally used in Ayurvedic medicine, appears to modulate the hypothalamic-pituitary-adrenal (HPA) axis, helping the body adapt to and buffer the effects of chronic stress.
Beyond psychological resilience, ashwagandha has also demonstrated neuroprotective and anti-inflammatory properties. Its active constituents, including withanolides, support cellular resistance to oxidative stress and enhance mitochondrial function.
